Cacti have Spines instead of Leaves

Cacti spines are modified leaves. Cacti have rounded bumps or buds called areoles. From these bumps grow spines, flowers, roots, hair, and branches. The spines growing out of these areole buds are what distinguishes cacti from succulents.

Spines evolved to help cacti thrive in desert environments by providing multiple functions. They protect the cacti from predators that might eat them, provide shade to protect the outside of the cacti from heat and hot sun, help to regulate temperature, reduce water loss and help the plant to spread by cacti pieces attaching themselves to passerby’s by their spines then dropping off and taking root in a new location.

Easily to Grow Succulents

Succulents store water in their foliage. Most have leaves or modified leaves that are firm to the touch and have a swollen-thick or “succulent” look to them. Some common succulents are Aloe Vera, Burros Tail, Echeveria, Jade Plant, Lithops, String of Pearls, Sansevieria (Snake Plant) and Sempervivums.

Succulents are very popular plants, they come in unique looking shapes, colors and sizes and can produce beautiful flowers. Best of all, they are hardy plants and do well even in poor conditions.

Cacti and succulents are easy to grow for all ages and do well in our climate. Our stock is always changing, so check back often for fun, new varieties!
