Rewarding Vegetable Gardens

There is nothing like the taste of homegrown tomatoes!

Growing your own food can be very rewarding. When you plant and harvest your own food, you have control over the entire process. You decide which starts or seeds to plant, which fertilizer and pesticides are used and how it is grown and harvested.

Benefits of Growing your Own Food:

  • Control of how it is grown from start to harvest.
  • Broader selection of seeds and starts; grow what you like to eat!
  • Healthier food; harvested and eaten fresh when nutrients are high.
  • Better for the environment, grow organic!
  • Gardening is good for you, it relieves stress, gets you out in the fresh air, and it’s great exercise!
  • Fun for the whole family! Children love watching things grow and eating goodies right out of the garden; encourage our next generation of gardeners!
  • Joy in sharing the bounty with your neighbors and friends!

Vegetables Year-Round

Gardeners here in the North state are lucky enough to be able to grow vegetables all year-round. The secret to a successful Cool-Season vegetable garden is the timing. August and September is when our summer gardens are in full swing; tomatoes are abundant, winter squash is ripening and you can’t pick zucchini’s fast enough! Winter is the furthest thing from our minds, but it is time to start the Cool-Season vegetable garden.

Seeds need warmth to germinate and seedlings and starts need warm soil to establish a strong, healthy root system before the first frost arrives near the end of October. The average first and last frost dates here in Shasta County are October 15th and April 15th. Vegetables grown during this period need to be established enough to survive the cold weather and shorter daylight hours.

Winter gardens are much easier to maintain than summer gardens. Less watering because of the cooler weather, and once the rains start, you won’t have to water at all! Insects are usually not a problem and weeds are slow to grow, and those that do are easy to pull out.

The best part of your winter garden are the delicious vegetables and greens that you can grow!

Grow Vegetables in Pots

Container gardening is a great way to grow vegetables when space and time is limited. It involves less planning, and you can move the planters around for the most favorable growing conditions. Containers are great for porches, decks, patios, and balconies.

The secret to a successful container vegetable garden is to start with a great soil planting mix, not from your yard. A great mix is necessary to create the ideal growing environment to ensure healthy roots and happy plants. We have some great soil, just ask us about it!

Containers can be as creative as you want, basically anything that can hold soil and drains; assorted pots, water troughs, feed troughs, grow bags, Earth Box Garden kits, large buckets or even a kiddie pool.

The staff at Wyntour Gardens knows which soils and fertilizer will be best for your container gardens. Come in and see us, we will be happy to help you choose just what you need!
